Spain reaches new figures: 91.5 million international tourists up to November and a record in hotel spending.

Spain's tourism and hotel industry continues to set new records, consolidating its importance in the international arena. According to the most recent information from the National Statistics Institute (INE), Spain received 91.5 million foreign visitors during the first eleven months of the year, representing an increase of 3.4% compared to the same period of the previous year, thus reaching a new historical record in the series of Statistics of Tourist Movements at Borders (Frontur).

This favorable trend has continued even after the end of the summer season. In November, Spain received 5.8 million international tourists, representing an increase of 2.1%. This demonstrates an inclination towards deseasonalization and the country's structural strength as a tourist destination.

The United Kingdom leads the number of arrivals and spending in Spain. So far this year, 18.2 million British visitors have traveled to the country, representing an increase of 3.9%. France ranks second with 12.1 million tourists, followed by Germany with 11.4 million.

The high number of visits is directly reflected in revenues. From January through November, total spending by international tourists reached €126.707 billion, an increase of 6.9% compared to the previous year. It is important to mention that this amount already exceeds the record spending recorded during the entire year 2024.

During November, a significant increase in profitability per visitor has been observed. The average daily expenditure stood at 188 euros, representing an increase of 5.4%. Meanwhile, typical spending per tourist reached €1,399, an increase of 2.9%. In terms of the distribution of spending, British tourists spent the most, with 16.1%, followed by Germans and Nordic tourists.

The hotel consolidates its position in the vacation rental market. The hotel industry experienced a 6.1% increase in tourist arrivals, while, in contrast, the rental housing sector saw a 1.9% decrease.

The role of the hotel within the value chain is evident, as 57.6% of November's total revenue was generated by tourists staying in hotels. Likewise, spending on lodging experienced an annual increase of 6.8% in that month.

Alterations in patterns and significant destinations

The data show a shift in traveler behavior: extended stays (15+ nights) have declined by 10.4%, while shorter trips (4-7 nights), which involve higher daily spending, are gaining popularity. Leisure continues to be the main driving force, accounting for 81% of total spending.

At the regional level, Catalonia continues to be the leading region in terms of tourism, receiving 19.1 million visitors and generating the highest revenues. For its part, the Canary Islands stood out in November, capturing more than 25% of tourist arrivals and expenditures due to the winter season. In addition, the Community of Madrid stood out for its high profitability in November, experiencing a 14.6% increase in visitor spending.

With these results, Spain is not only overcoming its quantitative limits, but is also moving towards a business model focused on the added value and strength of the hotel industry.
